Ruby's new favorite word - Outside!

Ruby has learned the meaning of 'outside' and she even requests going out. What she says sounds a little more like 'soutside' but we know exactly what she means.

She knows that outside there are fun things such as her water table and her new lawn mower.

It is where she can smell the roses (what's left of them after the summer at least!).

And it is where she can ride her 'beep beep' car. We ride down the driveway everyday to check the mail.

Enjoying the fountain in Southlake

Friday night we went out to dinner in Southlake. They have a nice fountain near the restaurant and Ruby loves watching the water. I put her up on the ledge, holding her fingers and she walks around and around, close to the edge.

The three of us had a really relaxing, delicious dinner on the patio of the restaurant. Ruby was so well-behaved and ate her dinner while babbling on about all the sights around.

Neighborhood Garage Sale finds

This weekend was our neighborhood's garage sale. I found Ruby a few things including a vanity, a lawn mower, several books, puzzles, a baby cradle, a tea set and some cute clothes!

Owl says hoot, hoot, hoot

Ever since Lauren/Noah's owl-themed birthday party Ruby has known how to say owl. Recently she learned that owls say hoot, hoot.

She is fascinated with owls everywhere -on tv, on signs, on fabric, in books. Last week we went to a neat toy shop in Southlake that has this concrete owl in front. Ruby had to say hello.

Ruby plays in the kitchen

One of Ruby's friends invited us over to try out her new play kitchen. All the little girls loved it.

The kitchen had these neat burners that lit up and sizzled when they used pans.

Hot dogs anyone?

What a fun playdate!

Oktoberfest with the Jaaskelainen's

Last weekend we went to Addison Oktoberfest with Sakari and Annette.

Ruby stayed with a babysitter at Matias' house.

Alex and I enjoying some good Oktoberfest beer.

Annette and I.

Morning walk around the duck pond

Since the weather was a slight bit cooler this week we've started going for walks again. It was just way to hot in the summertime!

I let Ruby walk around the sidewalks...she is still learning about walking in a particular direction. She often turns and speed walks the opposite way I'm going!

Awww, looking at a flower she found.

New recipes

Now that Ruby goes to bed consistently around 7, Alex and I have more time to try out new recipes. Some recent ones we really enjoyed were...

Indian vegetable samosas with homemade spicy mango chutney. Inside of phyllo pastry I put boiled potato, peas, spinach, cauliflower, curry spice, cumin, salt, pepper, sauteed onion, garlic and lemon juice. For the mango chutney I let a whole chopped mango, half an onion, brown sugar, cinnamon, red pepper flakes, ground ginger, salt and pepper simmer down into gooey deliciousness!

Another night we made Thai chili basil noodle stir fry (also called Drunken Noodles). It required quite a few
ingredients we just don't keep around the house...like bean paste and fish sauce!

Tutu tea party at Ruby's house

This past week Ruby hosted a tutu tea party at her house. All the toddlers wore their tutus and Ruby wore one I made for her. I bought each of the girls a rose to play with.

They loved Ruby's new slide...

And playing in her room.

We even played outside for a short time.

It was so cute to see all the girls dressed up. I'm sure we will do another one soon!

Grapefest 2010

Ruby and I met Lori and Maddie at Grapefest. We went on a weekday so it was free and less crowded!

Ruby and Maddie got to visit.

Maddie feeds Ruby.

We went in some of the cute girly boutiques on Main Street. Ruby was fascinated with this bracelet and bauble display. I bought her a sparkly pink bracelet for dress up days.

Visiting the fish at Cabela's

Ruby and I visited the fish at Cabela's. She gets so excited to watch them swim around in the tanks.

Walk to the spray park

Since the pools are now closed for the season we went to the neighborhood spray park to cool down.

Ruby and daddy in the water.

Ruby walked a good stretch on the way home.

Mama sews Ruby a short sleeve dress

I've been practicing sewing this week. I figured out how to make a short sleeve dress and was pleased with how it came out! The print is a beautiful multi-color hot air balloon pattern.

Since Ruby can't wear hair bows I made her a pin on corsage.

Brunch with Jess and Avery

Last weekend we met Jess and her daughter, Avery, for brunch. It was nice to visit and see how much the babies have changed since we last met.

Ruby and the hay bales

Near our house there is a large field with a row of 30 or so round hay bales. It is such a neat setting for some photos!

We took these last weekend late in the day.

Alex did his special HDR technique on this one.

Ruby telling us that she's finished posing for pictures.

Ruby's hair at 16 months

Ruby is the baldest 16 month old I know.

However, just last week I discovered she has enough wisps of hair to hold a very small hairbow.

And, here is Ruby's hair in the sunlight...will she be a redhead or a strawberry blonde perhaps?

Practicing with a spoon

Ruby has really shown an interest in utensils. Here she is in action with a spoon.

Ruby is 16 months old now

Ruby is now 16 months old and is really becoming her own little person now.

She can say lots of random words…probably the most significant of which is ‘NO!’ She is still learning the meaning of this word and sometimes says it for no particular reason. Other recent vocabulary additions include apple, tutu, truck, and owl. She knows how to make monkey and sheep sounds. When she hears a train she says choo choo. (Here’s what she was saying last month: Mama, Dadda, duck, (ba)nana, nigh(t) nigh(t), ball, book, bird, balloon, blueberry (said as 'buh buh' excitedly), belly button (sounds like buh buh buh as she points to her own and mine), bye-bye, baby, bow, wheel, (f)ish, sh(oe), peek (a) boo, meow, moo and ee-ii-ee-ii-o. Strange what they learn to say first!

She can point to her head, eyes, mouth, nose and ears when asked. And also is fascinated with bellybuttons.

She just recently learned how to use a fork (well, sort of).

She tries to put on her shoes.

She knows how to feed her babydolls a bottle and put them in their little beds. (And she also likes to throw them down her slide).

She can put a basketball in the hoop on her slide. (Daddy taught her this).

She loves necklaces, earrings and hair bows. (Her hair is just barely coming in. Today I noticed she has just enough to hold a hairbow clip. Hooray!)

She mimics things that Alex and I do such as blinking, putting ‘earrings’ on, and brushing teeth. She also will scrub her face with a washcloth or wipe.

Favorite foods lately include veggie burger patties, french toast, pasta, cheese, corn and blackberries. She is willing different things we give her including Hoisin chicken, as well as spinach and dill scrambled eggs. She recently devoured a baby back rib (on the bone) when we went out for BBQ.

She sleeps from 7 pm until 8 am most days. Naptime is usually around noon for about 2.5 hours.

We are having lots of fun with Ruby at this age (with the exception of the temper tantrums!)

VIDEO - Alex in the tunnel

I love when Alex comes upstairs to play with Ruby. He gets down on the floor with her and acts so goofy. She always giggles as he wrestles with her or plays with her toys in a new way.

Here is a video of Alex (INSIDE THE TUNNEL) playing with Ruby.

VIDEO - Ruby mimics mama... 'Sit down'

I've been trying to consistently discipline Ruby when it comes to climbing and standing on the furniture. I always say 'sit down' while trying to keep a serious face. It is so difficult when she is just playing and being cute!

Anyways, here's Ruby talking back to her mama. It really sounds like she is saying 'sit down!'

Friday night BBQ

We enjoyed some good BBQ with the Macnabs and Robersons. We also go to meet their friends, the Boysons who were visiting from Australia.

Ruby and mama.

For Ruby, the highlight was eating a BBQ pork rib. She ate ALL the meat, all the way to the bone.

Ahhhh, BBQ. This is the food we missed when we were living in London.

Ruby and her cousin made a stage out of the outdoor fireplace area, putting on a show.

VIDEO - Ruby's new slide

Here are a few video clips of Ruby enjoying her new slide.

Ruby gets a new SLIDE!!!

At one of our recent playdates there was a really neat slide that all the kiddos loved. I researched them online and we decided to get one for Ruby. She has been climbing on everything lately, so I think it is perfect for helping her burn off all that toddler energy.

We will keep inside in the playroom.

She is so proud of herself when she gets to the top. Look at that smirk!

She kept going up and down the slide, over and over and over again.

It comes with a basketball, soccer ball and football. Alex has already taught her how to put the basketball in the hoop. She also likes to roll the balls down the slide.
